Exchange Stories Vol. 012

[Written by Yau Sze Ern]

She wants to go to a country where most of her friends never been before. Romania is the country she went for Global Community Development Programme (GCDP).

During her stay in Romania, Leong Ee Vonne felt that she had found a place where she always wanted to be, where she felt at peace. Unlike her home country, the weather in Romania is perfect. The air, the breeze, the nature there is totally different. Everything there is a breath of new life for her. Besides, she managed to met a lot of nice people there - locals and people from other countries. Being in Romania, it was like a dream come true for her. Everything was at slow pace, people stop to smell the flowers, greet each other hello or good morning, or you can just sit in the park and admire the flowers or enjoy the clear blue sky above. "It was magical!" says Ee Vonne.

To Ee Vonne, the major challenge that she faced is the language of communication. According to her, asking people for directions in Romania was always a joy because people there speaks Romanian while she speaks English. The interesting part was that both the locals and Ee Vonne will try their best to make each other understand and that helps her to reach the destination.

Being a student of an English Literature major, Leong Ee Vonne, has deep passion in teaching English and likes to teeach people the wonders of literature and she believes that children are the future of the world. Thus, to give them a better understanding of life, the children should learn literature from their childhood. She was involved in a project called Dradinita nr.23 in Romania.

She was there to teach English language in a kindergarten and to assist the teacher in preparing the class. She gained a lot of experiences and learnt how to communicate with the children there. She was the apple of the children's eye. Ee Vonne really enjoyed her time there with the joyful children.

Every morning she walks to the kindergarten. Teaching children is good for her soul, as they are innocent and eager to learn. Thus, these motivate Ee Vonne to appreciate the experience there with the children. At the same time, she is also learning the Romanian language. They will point at an object and say it in Romanian language, and in return, Ee Vonne will name the object in English.

She enjoyed watching cartoons together with the children there. It was fun when most of the children wanted to sit next to her or on her. That was her best memories with them. Playing in the garden when the sun is bright and hot is also one of her best time together with them too. Everyday after lunch, she will tuck them in bed for afternoon nap.

After her work, she will walk to the city center which is near to her home to get some groceries or sometimes she will walk around the city for sight-seeing. Later in the evening, she will join some friends to a nice cozy bar to have some drink and talk about anything in the world. Every night when the night is over, she wish that it never ends.

On weekends, they will travel outside of Brasov, the city where she live, to another city to explore and enjoy their journey in Romania, discovering every little things there. Remembering all these memories makes Ee Vonne happy and she wish to have a chance to go back there.

" Never in my life would I have expected to get a chance like this
to go to a foreign place to do what I am most passion about, travelling and teaching. "
